From first commit to production

Five steps, in order. Skip none of them.

  1. 01

    Understand

I like to understand the problem before touching the code. A short conversation about who this is for, what success looks like and what can't break saves weeks later on.

  2. 02

    Ship a slice

Rather than disappearing into a long design phase, I get something small and real running early. It is much easier to make good decisions when you are reacting to working software instead of a diagram.

  3. 03

    Iterate

From there I iterate in small, reviewable steps. Every change ships with tests, sensible logging and a way to roll it back, so releases stay boring in the best possible way.

  4. 04

    Hand over

Every project is different, so I don't force a template onto it. What I can promise is that everything I hand over is something I'd be happy to be on call for. That means clear docs, dashboards that tell the truth and no mystery code.

  5. 05

    Communicate

Throughout, I share progress when there is something worth looking at, not because the calendar says so. That keeps momentum high, avoids unnecessary meetings and leaves room to do the work properly.
